Beyond Screens and Keyboards

When you hear "Game Development," do you immediately picture a student coding away on a laptop at lightning speed?

At Orchids International School, game development is not just bound by screens and keyboards. Recently, students took on a hands-on challenge: Creating a life-size pinball game from scratch. Using Spruce Wood of different dimensions, they carefully cut, joined, sanded, drilled, and milled each piece to achieve the perfect shapes. This project allowed them to explore design, precision, and craftsmanship, showing that games can be built as much with hands as with code.

From Raw Materials to Playable Game

The students combined traditional manual tools like hacksaws, clamps, and hand-held drills with mini power tools including jigsaws and drill machines. This blend of techniques gave them practical experience in shaping, joining, and finishing wood while understanding safety and problem-solving in real-world conditions. Every cut and joint reflected patience, creativity, and teamwork.

What Makes This Pinball Game Truly Exciting?

It's not just a static wooden board—it's fully interactive. The game features two playing arms, a randomiser ball shooter, and a ball-returning rail to keep the action going. Designing and building these components introduced students to mechanics, physics, and timing, turning a classroom project into an engaging, hands-on lesson in engineering and design.
