CrankGen – Turning Curiosity into Power!
Have you ever imagined lighting up a bulb using nothing but your own energy? What if a simple crank of your hand could generate enough power to make LEDs glow and gears come to life? At our school's DIY Lab, students have the opportunity to bring this imagination into reality through an innovative and interactive project — CrankGen.

The Concept Behind 'CrankGen'
CrankGen is a PAN-India educational initiative designed to help students understand the science behind mechanical motion and electrical generation. It introduces the principles of interlocking gears and manual power generation, where learners experience first-hand how mechanical effort can be converted into electrical energy.
The project's primary goal is to blend theoretical STEM learning with practical exploration, encouraging students to learn not just by observation but by creating and experimenting themselves.
Key Learning Objectives
- Understanding mechanical motion principles
- Learning electrical energy generation
- Hands-on STEM skill development
- Practical application of classroom concepts
Building the Power Within
Every part of the CrankGen model is assembled by students with accuracy and care. The process begins with fitting together 3D-printed parts, plastic gears, metal bolts and nuts, acrylic panels, and MDF flaps — all integral to the project's mechanical structure.

The name CrankGen originates from its core concept—cranking a motor shaft to generate electricity. When the handle is turned in the correct direction, it activates a DC motor that produces electricity to light up three LEDs soldered in series — all wired and assembled by the students themselves.

A Blend of Aesthetics and Engineering
CrankGen is as visually captivating as it is educational. The transparent outer frame allows observers to watch the gears in motion, revealing the intricate coordination that makes the system work. As the handle 'helm' turns, the MDF flaps open gracefully in a floral pattern, uncovering a 3D-printed reactor arc at the center — symbolizing the power of innovation.
Guided stickers placed around the model help students understand the direction of rotation and the underlying principles that make the LEDs illuminate, reinforcing the connection between motion and energy.
