Introduction

No, agriculture and horticulture are related, but not the same.

Climatic Suitability for Horticultural Crops

Why can’t we grow apples in all states? Why do we get better vegetable production in red sandy soil? Can we grow all horticultural crops under the same soil and climatic conditions?   4. Arid and Semi-arid Regions: the hot and dry climate suits fruits like pomegranate and date palm, vegetables like onion, cluster bean, and cucurbits, along with certain spices.

Importance of Horticulture in Daily Life

Horticulture is not just important economically but also for nutrition and livelihoods. Here are the main reasons why:

1. Food and nutritional security:

Horticultural crops have nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are important for human health. They are the major constituents of our diet and Immunity. 

2. Major Economic Source

About 13 percent of the gross cropped area under horticulture contributes nearly 33 percent of the agricultural GDP, with productivity significantly higher than that of food grains. India is the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world and is the leading global producer of crops such as mango, banana, onion, ginger, and okra.

3. Employment Creator

Crop production is a labour-intensive activity. It requires a large workforce at every stage of the production process, from seed sowing or transplanting to harvesting and marketing. Therefore, it generates employment in rural areas, where many people depend on these activities for their livelihood.

4. Environmental Benefits

Future Scope of Horticulture 

Horticulture represents a vast and promising future, as it contributes nearly 33 percent of the agricultural GDP of India, opening wide avenues for employment. Such growth brings opportunities in many domains, including the integration of technology, innovation, and advanced cultivation practices. The continuous decrease in cultivable land area, along with a fast-growing population, shifts the cog increasingly towards intensive and productive farming systems. This, in turn, stimulates the growth of input industries in developing hybrid seeds, nutrients, protected cultivation structures, advanced farming equipment, and technology-integrated farming management systems.
